The Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) Commons program at INET’s annual conference in Berlin was an enormous success. Hundreds of economics students of all ages from across the globe converged on Berlin to participate in a vibrant parallel event to the Berlin conference.
The young scholars in the Commons were able to view the conference live through a private connection and meet and talk to the more than 90 conference participants, all of whom visited the Commons and engaged in challenging roundtable discussions. George Soros, Andrew Sheng, James Heckman, Wendy Carlin, Joscha Fischer, and Antonio Damasio all met with the students in the Commons. Joseph Stiglitz was literally mobbed as soon as he stepped off the elevator.
The infectious energy of these young economic thinkers was omnipresent at the conference. INET Executive Director Rob Johnson opened the proceedings with a warning to conference participants that “they’re watching you” as he pointed to a live picture of the undergraduate students, graduate students, and doctoral candidates massed in the Commons area. And the conference ended with the young scholars “occupying” INET, as several hundred students from the Commons streamed into the auditorium to participate in the final session live.
INET is in the midst of designing programs specifically for young scholars, but for now, to keep updated on all the latest INET news, click here to join our mailing list. You can also join the YSI Commons Facebook Group to join the discussion with other young scholars.
